Care for the Wild International’s work to help Africa’s
elephants is wide ranging. As with all of our work we aim to make a difference by providing practical help to aid animals in most need. Projects we are involved in include fighting poachers and hunting, stopping illegal trade in ivory, campaigning against culling in South Africa and supporting orphaned elephants in Tsavo National Park in Kenya.
Care for the Wild International runs an adoption programme for elephants in Kenya, Africa, in conjunction with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and their elephant orphanage. Most elephants become orphaned as a result of human activities, including poaching for ivory, hunting, snaring and entrapment in man-made structures.

When very young elephants orphans are rescued, they are taken to the Daphne ne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s orphanage in Nairobi National Park. At around a year old the weaning process begins and when the young
elephant orphans reach approximately two years of age they are taken to Tsavo National Park to begin the gradual process of rehabilitation into the wild herds of the park.
The Daphne Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has already reintroduced a total of 60 previously injured or lost, grieving orphan elephants into the wild herds in Tsavo National Park. Additional funds raised from our
elephant adoptions or donations are used to pay for vital anti-poaching and elephants protection work in Tsavo National Park and elsewhere in Africa.

Care for the Wild is leading a campaign against the resumption of elephant culling in South Africa. Elephants once populated the whole of Africa, but their range and numbers have contracted sharply due to the effects of hunting, poaching and other human activities.
We are also working to protect wild elephants against cruel ivory poachers in Africa. In addition to fighting the poachers on the ground we are investigating the scale and patterns of US ivory markets and highlight legal and enforcement loopholes facilitating illegal ivory trade with the US.
Our aim is to make a difference and help elephants wherever they are in need which is why we are fighting to stop elephant culling in South Africa and the illegal trade in ivory all over the world.

| Our work with elephants is just part of our overall practical work to fight animal cruelty, promote animal welfare, rescue and help animals in need and make a difference! |
