Badgers once again face the threat of dying in their thousands in a misguided attempt to rid cattle of tuberculosis.

Scape goats
Although protected by law, tens of thousands of badgers have already been killed by the UK Government to try and erradicate bovine TB. However research shows this simply isn't the solution. In fact targeted badger culls in affected areas has increased rates of TB. But inspite of the scientific evidence, the Welsh Assembly has given the go ahead for a mass cull of thousands of badgers.

Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones has announced that a limited badger cull, alongside stricter cattle measures, will take place in a pilot area of West Wales as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s TB Eradication Programme. Elin Jones said: “The approach we will be taking in the pilot area, carrying out a badger cull alongside strict cattle controls, has not been tried before in the UK. However, it is proving successful in countries like New Zealand, where wild possums and cattle are the main sources of infection.” Five culls will take place over a limited period each year within the pilot area, which measures approximately 288km². Culling will be carried out alongside strict cattle control measures.

What we do

Care for the Wild International (CWI) has been involved in the badger culling issue since 1998. An appeal was launched to raise funds to help the 10,000 badgers earmarked for slaughter in an experiment to test the effect of culling on bovine TB.

In the past, Care for the Wild International has teamed up with Secret World Wildlife Rescue (SWWR) and Wildlife Aid (WA) to launch the Black and White Campaign. Thousands of campaign leaflets were sent out to highlight the key anti-culling arguments.

CWI and many other wildlife charities have written to the Welsh Assembly to reconsider any proposals to resume indiscriminate badger culling in their efforts to control the spread of TB in cattle, so we are very disappointed that the cull was given the go ahead.

The Welsh Assembly will carry out an evaluation, including a post mortem examination of culled badgers, as well as detailed investigation of each cattle TB incident within the pilot area. Evaluation will also include assessing the impact of cattle movement measures and the social impact on farming families, and any ecological impact within the area. An annual report on the pilot area will also be provided. CWI will be following this evaluation closely, so please keep an eye on our website for further developments.
